Grocery Store "Monopoly Collect & Win Game"

Monopoly, apparently, might have returned to your local grocery store. More opportunities to win free donuts and packets of dry gravy mix, right? Even if those big prizes are out of reach, I still enjoy playing along.

Last weekend, I had a craving for a Subway sandwich and got into my car to get one, but just as I was supposed to turn left to get there, I turned right, instead, and drove to Safeway for a hot deli selection. I paid $4 for a breakfast burrito, and got that and a few Monopoly game pieces in return.

After getting home and having my meal, I proceeded to open the game pieces. The first few were nothing special, but one of the last coupons was worth FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, IN CASH.

You'd think I was running around the room and screaming like I just won Nevada Megabucks, but surprisingly, my initial response was muted. I was a little skeptical, too. I really thought it might've been a joke.

I showed it to Brian for his thoughts. We spent a few minutes looking through the sweepstakes rules and prizes on offer before convincing ourselves this was real. I also noticed someone wrote on the coupon in semi-invisible ink, probably to assist in the verification process. Then it became very real.

We returned to Safeway the next morning to speak to someone at Customer Service about it. The store manager gave us a claim form to send to the sweepstakes administrator for verification, along with the game piece. We sprung for FedEx Standard Overnight and crossed our fingers the deliverable reached its destination safely. It did.

I received a call from a sweeps representative this morning. The game piece was verified, and they asked for a photocopy of my drivers license for tax purposes, which I sent out thirty or so minutes ago. The $5,000 check will, officially, be in my name!

The next step will be to pick up the prize at the store giving me the winning coupon. Hopefully, that'll occur within the next couple of weeks. I will keep everyone posted.

    Hooray!

That is awesome !! It's nice to see someone "real" getting something from this game.

Thank you! If strictly used for groceries, I could imagine it paying for 6-9 months worth, for a two-person, one-cat household. (Laughs)

We’re planning to use some of it to finance a birthday (mine) trip to Reno and a first-class ticket for Brian to visit family in Connecticut next month, and then apply the rest of it to FY 2019 income taxes.

I just opened 10 of those tickets from my local Vons store and I won a box of Animal Cookies! congrats! Those pieces, unless they are instant winners, are a big pain to try and collect and organize on the game board.

    Great win.
I see Oklahoma does not offer the game. We lost our Homeland stores and I sure wish they would bring them back.
I would play if it was offered here. Guess I will have to make a trip to Arkansas to get some game pieces.
I hope you get some more wins. Good luck.
