Planning a trip to Niagara Falls & Casinos

Hello Fanatics, I would like your advice on planning this trip! Living in Texas, we have never seen Niagara Falls and I am thinking about a trip this summer.

I have heard the Canadian side casinos have the best view, is that true?

Specific recommendations for one to stay and play a couple of nights?
Do we need to change currency before we go?

Other things to see in the area?

Should we drive or fly, and if so to what airport?
Looking forward to your comments! Thank you.

Until more of the locals see your questions, below is a link to an earlier thread that is still mostly current about the slots. A quick Search might bring up more threads about the area.

As far as travel, you'll need a car so if you fly in, you should plan on renting one to see the most and to get back and forth across the border easier.

Airports on the Canadian side: Toronto and Hamilton. Airports on the U.S. side: Buffalo-Niagara International and Niagara Falls International. If I were flying, I'd fly into a U.S. airport, rent a car, and drive in to Canada. It's almost always the best option.

Niagara Falls International is the closest airport (half-hour drive), but it serves only discount airlines. I think Spirit is one of them, but it may be your best bet for flying since it's the closest and the cheapest. It can be very expensive flying into and out of Canada, that's why you can see so many Canadian license plates at the Buffalo airport. I also think Spirit flies into and out of Austin and New Orleans, if that's a help to a Texan. Sprit also flies to many cities in the south, you might only need them for the 2nd leg of the trip and use another airline for the first leg. Check the travel sites.

I have to run but I'll write more about accommodations later. The accommodations are better and more plentiful on the Canadian side.

You also get a better view of the falls from the other side although I think you can get more up-close and personal with them from the U.S. side. For that reason, have passports. You need to visit both sides.

As far as currency, the Canadian slots take Canadian currency and the U.S. slots take U.S. currency. Changing money is no problem. Most of the Redemption machines will change currency. Most of the stores take both. I live right on the border, travel back and forth regularly, and usually have both currencies in my pocket at all times. It's never a problem.

    More later!

Thanks Bonus Times for the info!
I got a great rate on Southwest for us to Buffalo, a rent car, and reservations at Fallsview. So we are mostly set now. I checked with my bank about converting some dollars to Canadian and they seem steep!
They said $300 US Minus $7.00 fees = $375 Canadian
Should I just wait and convert as we need to at Fallsview?
    Thanks!

Coming from the Buffalo airport which bridges/route should we take to get to Fallsview? Also we will probably head up to see Toronto one of our days there.

It usually depends upon the day of the week and the time of day. You can use either the Peace Bridge or the Rainbow Bridge. Keep this link below and it will give you the waiting times with frequent updates.

As far as conversion, wait until you get here because you might convert more than you'll need. What happens if after that first $20 Canadian you put in a slot machine, you hit a giant jackpot and have thousands of Canadian dollars in your hand. You will have converted all that money for no reason.

Anyone have some “must see” suggestions for the Fallsview area?

Much depends on your interests and whether or not you are willing to get in the car and venture out for a few miles or kilometers.

You'll find everything from zip lines and race carts to leisurely strolls through beautiful gardens and boat rides on the Niagara River where you can get up close and personal to the Falls. You'll find that in general the Canadian side in and around the Falls is a well developed tourist area. Clifton Hill is a must see. Picture a boardwalk/carnival atmosphere, only on a steep hillside.

A definite must is getting in the car and traveling a few miles/km along the river to the small town of Niagara on the Lake. Lots of nice shops and restaurants there. It's a must see and gets you right up to Lake Ontario. Lots of stuff on the web you can find about Niagara on the Lake. If you are here in the summer, you'll be passing some of the best wineries and vineyards in the area.

When you are in the states (either on your way to or coming back from Canada), stop into Seneca Niagara Casino. It has undergone major renovations over the past decade. I took someone there who hadn't been there for over a decade, and they barely recognized it. Although they have many of the newest slot games, they also retained a good number of the classics that people are now starting to miss. Also visit the Falls from the American side if only to walk through Niagara State Park and get really up close and personal to the Falls. The views are spectacular here too.

Two of my favorite attractions on this side to take my visitors are the Whirlpool Jet Boats and the Niagara Power Vista. (You can access the Whirlpool Jet Boats on the Canadian side as well.) The Niagara Power Vista is free. Links below to both attractions.

I'll send more later. I also asked the Admins to move your post to another section. Because its in Trip Reports, some members from the area may not have seen it.
