Be careful what you wish for ..

I was there early one Thursday morning when she hit on the machine to my right for $ 12,866.00 on a $ .50 bet, and I was there the following Thursday morning when she hit on that same machine twice, about 90 minutes apart for two $ 1,000 Major jackpots, and those were happy times..
    .
In the weeks that followed I saw her there whenever I would visit, and friends told me they would see her on their visits.
Occasionally winning , but mostly losing. This pattern continued for several months and then no one saw her again. She had mentioned to a friend that she was also playing at Mt.Airy casino in the Poconos on Thursdays ( matching free play offers ) after she was finished playing at the Sands so we assumed that was where she was at when we didn't see her.

Just found out over the weekend that she had given it ALL back on those many return visits and had not paid the taxes on the win. In her desperation to reclaim her fortune and lost glory she started borrowing money and tried to turn back the clock.

Things got worse when she lost her job through a plant closing, defaulted on her car loan, and had to give up her apartment and move in with her sister.. Arguments daily with family and friends, started smoking and drinking again, and became someone that nobody knew anymore.

Word has it that when she finally gave up the Ghost, she turned to dealing and shop lifting, got caught, and is awaiting sentencing while remaining incarcerated.

I hardly knew her, other than witnessing her few moments of fortune on two consecutive Thursdays early last year, but it eats away at me when I hear how fast and far she has fallen, and all I can do is close my eyes and shake my head....

So Very Sad... Unfortunately these sad stories are far more common than most people think...
I personally know two people that lost their homes due too nothing more than gambling and many others that got themselves in serious financial trouble...
I truly believe that gambling for any other reason except entertainment is Trouble...

I lost a close friend to suicide because of her gambling addiction. None of our circle of friends realized how deeply troubled she was until afterward.

    Hi Cathy,

As you and Rich mentioned, I guess a lot of us know someone who has been caught up in this web and paid a heavy price for their addiction.
This lady stopped coming around when the people she saw regularly started asking her questions and trying to help her. She switched casinos and starting going in off hours to avoid recognition by concerned regulars.
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and let's hope no one else chooses a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Good to hear from you, Kathy, stay in touch.

Too bad. A sad story indeed; but nevertheless a powerful one!

I am not the only one who over the years of being a forum member, has warned against compulsion and addiction.

Always play responsibly and within your means!

I play any machine at a slow pace, see what the bells and whistles are. Get a feel, have fun. Do I win big?

NO, but I also do not lose big.
