    Unhappy Northlands Park Racino Closing

With the new Century Mile Racetrack about to open this spring, after 113 years of operation (23 years for the Spectrum), Northlands Park in Edmonton, AB Canada will officially close its doors this Thursday Jan 31st.

Northlands Park (aka: The Slots at Northlands Park) was Edmonton's destination for live horse racing and entertainment. It was a smaller facility only having about 600 slots, but it was a destination for fun. Northlands was a different kind of casino, they really promoted the "fun" aspect by doing promotions that others never would have thought of. Northlands was the first casino in Edmonton to offer "Cash Back" rewards. All though they were not allowed to have players tracking (as it was illegal in the Province at the time), they still figured out a way to give back to the players. They encouraged their players to win (even if it was only $50) you felt like a winner there.

Nothlands always got the coolest and newest games first on their slot floor, and even hosted the Summer Fair Casino (adjacent on their property in the Expo centre). The AGLC decided to stop hosting the Summer Fair Casino's a few years back due to rising costs and loss of interest. Even if it was only one game, you would know that Northlands had it. They also were known for having the popular games there as well.

Lots of memories of that place.

I am going to miss going to Northlands (even though I have not been there in several years).

Century Mile (located near the International Airport in Leduc/Nisku) will be opening April 1st with 600 slots.

Why did they close? Because the venue was dated and the horse racing association of Alberta decided to relocate to a different venue. Northlands proposed building a new facility but ended up getting rejected by the city council (Northlands is a non-profit group).

Why did I quit going there? Couple reasons. First when I lived in Edmonton (no longer live there), it was hard to get to if you didn't have a vehicle you would have to walk across the grounds to get to the LRT (train). The area is kind of sketchy too.

Also found that they were not getting the new games as often as they use too.

It is sad to see a local business that has served it's community for over a century close it's doors...
    Thank You Northlands!
    Here with You! since 9/29/09
